Introduction to Lisa Campbell, CEO of Unveil Aesthetics

Lisa Campbell is a nurse practitioner and the CEO of Unveil Aesthetics, an aesthetics and wellness practice based out of Wilmington, Delaware. She specializes in cosmetic injectables, Botox filler, bio stimulators, and will offer GLP-1 peptides hormone replacement soon.

Lisa’s Journey to Opening a Med Spa

Lisa holds two bachelor’s degrees. After graduating, she researched accelerated nursing programs. She got her BSN from the University of Delaware and spent a decade of her nursing career at Christiana Hospital. During her last year, she became a part of the Covid unit. She wanted to try something different, but she really loved taking care of people.

Lisa got Botox for the first time at 27 and ended up going to nurse practitioner school in 2019. She knew that opening her own aesthetics practice was her ultimate goal.

She got her start in a plastic surgeon’s office, and she feels most aesthetic providers should start there or in dermatology for the foundations. She continually invested in trainings, and eventually opened her own LLC in 2023.

Facial Sculpting

Lisa is internationally trained in facial sculpting, and she believes training abroad really helped her practice take off. She shared her training journey on Instagram, and she thinks it helped people respect and trust her as their provider.

Lisa was first trained in London by Dr. Zack Alley, who is a globally renowned expert in facial sculpting. Then, she went to the Cotswolds to train with Dr. Kate Goldie, who is known for regenerative medicine. Lastly, she trained with Dr. Benji Dhillon, a facial aesthetics expert. Training with all three of these experts was very intense, but Lisa was able to implement what she learned right when she got home.

What She Wishes She Knew Before Starting Her Business

When things get hard, you probably will wish you worked for someone else. There are a lot of stressors you have as a business owner, that you don’t need to worry about with a 9-5. You will likely have a lot of overhead, like outsourcing for social media, accounting, and bookkeeping.

You learn as you go. You know your craft, but knowing business is a whole other skillset. You will make mistakes, fail, and have to come back from it.

It’s hard to shut your work brain off. You may be at dinner with your partner or playing with your kids, and you could still have business ideas swirling around in your head.

Shifting the Business Model

At one point, Lisa decided to stop offering a menu of services. She noticed that people were always wanting a half syringe of lip filler, and then be back in a month for the other half. She decided to shift into an anatomy-based approach. Her patients trust her as the expert to tell them how much should go in their lips.

Every patient is unique, and you’re paying for the result, expertise, and advanced training your provider has. Lisa doesn’t just take orders; she guides her patients through their treatment plan.

Saying No As a Provider

When you work in aesthetics, sometimes you know when the outcome won’t be good for a patient. For example, if someone new came into Lisa’s practice with a lot of lip filler and she wanted another full syringe, it’s her job to do what’s best for the patient. Part of a provider’s job is screening for body dysmorphia and psychological issues, just like in a hospital.

Lisa will tell a patient that she wants to start fresh and guide them with a treatment plan. It’s her job to protect her brand and reputation and work for her clients’ best interests.

Building a Premium Brand

Lisa initially started her business as LC Aesthetics before rebranding to Unveil Aesthetics. She worked with Brandwell to build for the future vision of her company, and she had to have a website and brand that conveyed that she was an established practice.

Lisa said rebranding was an investment for a good reason, because it will come back to you. She really wanted to attract a certain type of patient, so rebranding was a pivotal component.

The mission and core values have been a huge focus for Lisa, because she wants to be able to relay that message to her team so that the culture remains strong. Each letter of Unveil stands for something:

  • U: Unwavering clinical excellence

  • N: Noble ethics

  • V: Visionary leadership

  • E: Education centric

  • I: Integrity

  • L: Legacy of trust

Answering Your Common Aesthetics Questions

There are some FAQs people had on Instagram about medical aesthetics and trends. Here’s what Laura had to say.

First Treatment for Younger Looking Skin

The number one recommendation Lisa has is medical grade skincare. This is skincare that’s evidence-based, heavily researched, and has more active ingredient in it. Lisa says healthy skin is 80% what you do at home and 20% what you do at a med spa. You have to have skin that’s primed and prepped in order to see the best results.

Face Taping for Contouring

Ditch the face taping for contouring and silicone patches. She does think mouth taping is great for sleep apnea and can help with your jawline.

Red Light Therapy at Home

Do it—Lisa likes it a lot!

Back Alley Botox

When it comes to Botox that anyone can buy and inject, don’t do it. Without medically-trained experience and licensure, that’s something you want to avoid.

Wild Salmon Sperm Facials

Salon sperm is basically a huge multivitamin for your skin, and Lisa has tried it. She is hesitant that there’s a lack of research for it now, but the results are great.

Best Makeup Brands for Women in Their 30s and 40s

First of all, don’t skip SPF—even if it’s cloudy, snowing, etc. Colorscience is an SPF makeup brand. Another clean brand is Merit, and they have a 5-minute makeup routine.

Advice for Staying Grounded When Business Feels Hard

There will be times when business feels hard and you come up against resistance. What’s gotten Lisa through those times is remembering that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. You can do whatever you set your mind to. Avoid people that try to hold you back or don’t support you, and you will soar.

Key Quotes

“The biggest misconception when it comes to medical aesthetics is that anybody can do it, anyone can pick up a syringe and inject botox. That is such a myth.”
